10 Minute Fastwrite

10 Minute Fastwrite #1

My past experience with notetaking is just what I have had to do for school. In high school I was in the International Baccalaureate Program, which is like advanced placement, so there was a lot more notetaking than regular classes, which had me much better prepared for college. I also took an English 101 class where the professor did things a little bit differently, what I mean is that the class was not focused on grammar, like most English 101 classes, it was more of reading, writing, developing intellectual thought and writing a 6-9 page paper. Note taking does not help me much, when I read something and I know Ill want to use it later in a paper then I just remember where it was in the source and refer back to it when it is time to use it. I like to do it this way because if I take notes and change some of the authors words i might unintentionally plagiarize when I try to reword it in my paper, so I feel its best to just refer back to the original. What I just mentioned is the only way notetaking would have got in my way in previous research projects. The only notetaking that I do that I would consider beneficial would be in class lecture note taking, without lecture notes, I may have been in some trouble.

Jen,

I wish I could just remember everything like you can. I used to be able to, but ever since I started college that capability flew right out of my head! When I was younger my mom used to tell people I was her day planner, she would tell dates, times, and events and than have me remember to remind here at an appropriate time. It worked great, I had this strange ability to remember everything she told me!

To bad that didn't last, as soon as I hit midterms of my first quarter I told mom her day planner quite! I've always made lists, but now I stick pink post it notes on everything and keep a day planner myself. I can still remember everything without notes in the summer, but as soon as school starts my head is so stuffed with info that I have to write everything down.

I understand what you mean about lecture notes. Lecture notes are probably the most important note-taking a student does!

Good luck as you continue working towards your final paper,
Courtney

See the English 101 class it took at Clark also didn't have the grammar or really even anything else they were strict on. I had to do my research on a culture and chose the deaf culture. I just wrote on that. i didn't have to have sources, or works cited stuff. That's great you went through a program where you could learn more about note taking, that sure helps out!

Well, I certainly dont attempt to remember where my article was that talked about this or that. Good for you for having such a great memory, but its not happening here! : ) I like to take notes in the comment area and highlight in word when I save a file. That helps me. I think I might try a suggestion from Courntey and color code my notes by subject within my larger topic.

Your 101 Eng. class sounds interesting. Sometimes I feel like Im concentrating so much on grammar and smaller things( yet important things to learn), that I loose track of learning the bigger lesson. I want to be creative, have time to think about structure more, to add more personality. Maybe a creative writting class will help that.

Well, good luck this week. Its been crazy trying to do so much research. I dont know about you but I am tired !

good day,
Gin
